Staff sport gains momentum

Organised staff sport is blossoming across the sector and Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ staff teams are steadily building their reputation.

Staff sport teams promote health and build social capital amongst working adults

The Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ netball and football teams took part in the Top 4 tournament held at Tswane University of Technology, Pretoria on 22 March 2025.

Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ies went up against hosts and teams from Gauteng Emergency Services, Ekurhuleni Emergency Services, Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital and the Teachers Football Club (Meadowlands).

The fledgling Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ Staff Netball team played three games securing one win, one draw and one loss while the Football team won all their three games by 3-1.

 Sport participation is associated with quality social networks boosting social and psychological health. Sport engagement has also been linked to , making it easier for individuals to achieve market and non-market objectives through interactions with other individuals.

Recreational and Competitive Sport

While there are a range of tournaments for adults, university staff also participate in the University Sport South Africa ,  amongst other tournaments.

The USSA Staff Sport Programme dates back to 2019 when it was launched at Durban University of Technology and aims to create an environment which will encourage staff sports persons to strive for excellence in the workplace and in sports as well, while giving participants the opportunity to interact socially and competitively.
