International Awareness Day for Chronic Immunological and Neurological Diseases

- Beth Amato, Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ Faculty of Health Sciences

On International Awareness Day for Chronic Immunological and Neurological Diseases, the faculty spotlights  Lefa Lerotholi, a PhD candidate at WADDP and a Lecturer in Pharmacology.

Lerotholi’s work focuses on neuropsychopharmacology, design of multi-target CNS drugs, and brain-targeted drug delivery systems.

Chronic immunological and neurological diseases remind us that illness is often experienced through the brain and body together — affecting fatigue, pain, cognition, mood and quality of life.

For his contribution, Lerotholi has recently been selected to participate in the African College of Neuropsychopharmacology (AfCNP) School on Precision Neuropsychopharmacology and Brain Health, to be held at Aga Khan University in Nairobi, Kenya.

This fully funded, highly competitive program brings together outstanding early-career scientists and trainees from across Africa working in neuroscience, mental health, psychiatry, psychology, neurology, and pharmacology. This opportunity aligns closely with his PhD work and WADDP’s broader focus on patient-centred therapeutic science.

“Brain health is central to how people experience chronic illness, treatment and recovery — and precision neuropsychopharmacology is helping us ask better questions about how to support patients,” says Leratholi.
