Professor Dorrit (Dori) Posel – Distinguished Professor, Helen Suzman Chair in Political Economy, and Professor in the School of Economics and Finance at Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ University – is a finalist in the 2025/2026 NSTF-South32 Awards, often dubbed the "Science Oscars" of South Africa. She has been nominated for the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her leading economic research, which has reshaped understanding of households, marriage, migration, gender, and wellbeing in South Africa and internationally.

In March, Prof. Uma Kollamparabil participated in the Nobel Symposia, which was the third symposium in the Nobel in Africa series. Uma was a respondent on a Nobel Symposia Policy Roundtable event, co-organised with the National Treasury, which was held on 15 March in Pretoria. The roundtable considered “how to make employment and labour market policy central to our thinking on social protection, industrialisation, and climate change in South Africa”. The guest speakers for the event were Seema Jayachandran (Princeton), Eric Verhoogen (Colombia) and Mushfiq Mobarak (Yale).
In March, Prof Dori Posel participated in the Nobel Symposia, which was the third symposium in the Nobel in Africa series. Dori was a discussant on the gender panel in the “Nobel Symposium on Micro-development research”, which was held at STIAS in Stellenbosch from 11-15 March 2024. The event brought together “leading researchers in poverty alleviation, health, productivity in agriculture and manufacturing, education, finance, trade, climate, gender, governance, and the latest methodological advances in development economics”. The other members on Dori’s panel included Eliana La Ferrera (Harvard) and Nava Ashraf (LSE).

Prof. Daniela Casale at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH) with Prof Diran Soumonni from the Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ Business School (also a Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½-IASH fellow) and Lynda Murray, the Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ Representative for the UK. Prof Daniela Casale was awarded a 2-month fellowship at the IASH at the University of Edinburgh to continue her work on the gendered effects of the Covid crisis over the longer-term.
