About Us
The Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ Mining Institute (WMI) traces its roots to a series of initiatives established to strengthen mining‑related research and engagement at Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ Witwatersrand.
This journey began in 2005 with the establishment of the Centre for Sustainability in Mining and Industry (CSMI), followed by the Centre for Mechanised Mining Systems (CMMS) in 2007. These centres laid the groundwork for multidisciplinary research focused on sustainability and technology.
In 2012, these efforts were brought together through the creation of the Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ Mining Research Institute (WMRI), which was established to serve as mining research hub across the University.
In 2016, the Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ Mining Institute (WMI) was formally established, marking a significant step in consolidating research, innovation, and collaboration in the mining industry.
WMI continues to sit at the centre of mining research, skills development, and stakeholder collaboration at Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½, supporting a responsible, competitive, and future‑ready mining sector.
