Yebo Gogga Yebo amaBlomo 2026

An interactive exhibition of science and biology

Dates: 13 – 17 May 2026
Times:  8:30 – 14:00 weekdays | 9:00 – 15:00 Saturday | 9:00 – 13:00 Sunday
Venue: Oppenheimer Life Sciences Building | Braamfontein Campus East

The need for ‘food’ and water is characteristic of all life.

This year Yebo Gogga is about who eats what and how living things have developed a range of strategies to avoid being eaten.

Broadly, there are two groups of living things. Those, such as plants, able to utilise inorganic chemicals for growth and reproduction and those like animals and fungi that require organic material for their life functions. Living things strive to get the food they need while avoiding becoming food for some other.

Sunday

10:30 | Lynn Katsoulis | Choosing plants that attract birds, butterflies and bees.

Making attracting birds butterflies and bees part of your plant choice decisions adds an extra dimension to your garden. It adds life and interest and promotes a greater diversity of life.

11:30 | Donald McCallum: Local flavour

Many people find the thought of eating insects distasteful and even horrifying. Insects are an important part of diet in many cultures and have excellent food value. This will be a chance to taste Mopani worms and to sample some of the wild herbs that can be used as teas. Tasting takes place in the Museum between 11:30 and 12:00
