WhizzBang
Science that goes bang
Whizzbang is a community outreach programme run by the Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ School of Chemistry, dedicated to making science, particularly chemistry, exciting and accessible for learners of all ages.
Through hands-on experiments and interactive demonstrations, the programme brings science to life for preschool, primary and high school learners, with a special focus on schools in underserved communities that lack access to laboratory resources.
What began as student-led "Whizz-Bang Shows" through the Student Chemical Society has grown into a fully fledged outreach initiative, led by staff and postgraduate volunteers from across the department.
What we do
Whizzbang runs shows and demonstrations at schools, orphanages, and science expos across Gauteng and beyond.
Recent activities have included a stall at the Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ Yebo Goga exhibition, participation in the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, a Mandela Day visit to a community centre for orphaned children in Pretoria, and a week-long hands-on lab programme for Grade 10 and 11 learners from New Nation School who had never had access to a fully equipped science lab.
The team also participates in events like the Pan-African Mathematics Olympiad, where chemistry demonstrations complement broader STEM engagement. Shows are tailored to different age groups and curriculum requirements.
