Introduction to CIMRU-ClinCoord Internal Medicine Research Unit, our dedicated clinical research unit 


CIMRU (ClinCoord Internal Medicine Research Unit) at WITS is the clinical research site 
embedded within the WITS Internal Medicine Department. Our dedicated research 
group focuses on conducting clinical trials, advancing translational research 
innovations, and serving our diverse patient populations. We work with industry 
sponsors and academic investigators to increase the representation of 
underrepresented patients within their datasets.

CIMRU-ClinCoord - Mission

To advance inclusive, equitable, and globally relevant clinical research within internal 
medicine by fostering partnerships among academia, industry, and community 
healthcare systems. 

Our objectives:
• Deliver operational excellence in clinical trial conduct through a highly trained, 
GCP-certified team.
• Increase representation of underrepresented communities in research datasets.
• Accelerate the translation of innovative therapies into clinical practice.
• Strengthen local and global research collaborations to improve health 
outcomes

CIMRU - ClinCoord - Areas of Research

CIMRU focuses on Phase II–IV clinical trials and translational research across key 
therapeutic areas, including:
• Cardiology: Cardiovascular medicine and cardiometabolic disorders
• Dermatology: Dermatological science and cutaneous immunology
• Endocrinology: Endocrine, metabolic, and hormonal disorders
• Gastroenterology: Gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary diseases
• Geriatric Medicine: Geriatric medicine and complex multimorbidity
• Haematology: Hematologic malignancies and disorders of hemostasis
• Infectious Diseases: Infectious diseases and host-pathogen interactions
• Nephrology: Renal medicine and electrolyte imbalances
• Oncology: Oncologic science and translational tumor biology
• Pulmonology: Respiratory medicine, including airway and interstitial lung 
disorders
• Rheumatology: Rheumatology and systemic autoimmune diseases

ClinCoord Site Network is a U.S.-based site management organization supporting 
research sites that serve underrepresented patient populations, partnering with 
academic colleagues, CROs, and sponsors committed to diversity in clinical research 
participation.
