Human Development

Human development involves the processes, on an individual and social level, towards fulfilment, not only of basic needs but of values including freedom, security, achievement and belonging.

Annual Report 2025-2026

In 2025-26, CoE-HUMAN continued to demonstrate how excellent science can improve lives. Its work spanned life-course development, intergenerational development, and socio-ecological and transformational development, with projects addressing mental health, non-communicable disease risk, nutrition, violence, climate change, early childhood development, adolescent development, household economics, and care pathways. The CoE-HUMAN’s contribution lies not only in generating high-quality research, but in ensuring that evidence is translated into public awareness, community-based innovation, and capacity development for the next generation of researchers.

Preconception Health and Care

CoE-HUMAN in partnership with SAMRC Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ Developmental Pathways for Health Research Unit set out to showcase the Bukhali HeLTI study as an exemplar of a programmatic intervention that shows the efficacy of a complex continuum of care that aims to combat the complex health burdens that young men and women who live in resource-constrained settings face, discuss prevention and health initiatives that are vital for the benefit of young men and women as well as show how good health and wellbeing matter prior to conception. The video showcases the role of the Bukhali trial as a programmatic intervention that aims to promote behaviour change from preconception.
