Deaf Education leaders, educators and practitioners will deepen and broaden their subject knowledge through this Diploma programme. which is a maximum of 1year full-time, and 2-years full-time.
Overview
South Africa's recognition of South African Sign Language as an official language of instruction through the Basic Education Laws Amendment Act has created unprecedented demand for educators qualified in Deaf Education.
This specialised PGDip, anchored in the Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ Centre for Deaf Studies, is one of very few programmes on the continent that prepares educators to teach Deaf and Hard of Hearing learners using evidence-based, rights-affirming approaches.
Potential candidates include
- Experienced teachers of the deaf,
- School leaders (HoDs, SMT),
- Department Officials in Specialised & Inclusive Education
- Teachers and other practitioners (such as school therapists/ school psychologists) within Inclusive Education
Career Opportunities
Graduates from this programme may pursue careers as:
- Specialist teacher/educator of Deaf and Hard of Hearing learners in schools for the Deaf inclusive schools, and special education settings
- Educational consultant in Deaf Education
- Advocacy and policy development for Deaf communities
Curriculum
Candidates are required to complete 4 compulsory courses in Deaf Education in order to graduate with 120 credits.

Entry Requirements
To be eligible for this diploma, you must hold a BEdHons in Deaf Education or Deaf Studies or equivalent + shortest 4 yrs further training + previous or concurrent teaching experience in Deaf Education context.
