Microbial Innovation and Research Advancement Hub (MIRAH)

At the MIRAH Research Unit we are committed to advancing innovative, high-impact biomedical research that addresses some of the most pressing infectious disease challenges facing South Africa and the African continent.

Operating under the University of the Witwatersrand, and a division of Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ Health Consortium, our research integrates translational science, molecular diagnostics, microbiology, epidemiology, and implementation research to improve disease detection, treatment monitoring, and patient outcomes.

Our work is grounded in a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach, bringing together clinicians, scientists, laboratory specialists, students, and public health partners to drive scientific discovery and meaningful healthcare impact. With a strong focus on tuberculosis and other infectious diseases, we aim to bridge the gap between laboratory innovation and real-world clinical application through cutting-edge research, technology development, and capacity strengthening.

The Hub supports a dynamic research environment that fosters scientific excellence, postgraduate training, mentorship, and collaboration across local and international networks. Through our work, we contribute to strengthening research capacity, informing policy, and developing accessible diagnostic and monitoring tools tailored to high-burden settings.

Located within the Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ research ecosystem, MIRAH is part of a broader network of globally recognised institutes dedicated to advancing health research, innovation, and equitable healthcare solutions in Africa and beyond. Inspired by leading Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½-affiliated research entities, the Hub is driven by a vision of scientific innovation, collaboration, and impact.
